Finding Connection at St. Paul’s

Sometimes, life throws curveballs, like a move and a pandemic. You may find yourself disconnected from the rhythms that once grounded you. For years, the United Church of Canada was a familiar fixture in my life. I have fond memories of childhood Sunday school—the singing, the crafts, and the friendly leaders. Later, as a mother, I spent 15 years immersed in the community, even teaching Sunday school and setting up a computer lab for the kids.

After moving to Bancroft and navigating the challenges of the past few years, I realized something was missing. I missed the simple joy of singing and the weekly messages of hope and love. I visited a few different churches in town, but I found my way back to the United Church community at St. Paul’s. It truly is a welcoming place.

From the moment you walk in, the atmosphere is uplifting. The greeters are always smiling, ready with a bulletin and a warm welcome. I even received a Mother’s Day hug! The service itself provides a wonderful balance of familiarity and reflection. I appreciate the traditional service order, which offers a sense of calm and structure, but not boring ritual! Every week, it’s something different and new. The music is mixed, and when Rev. Henrich’s joins the piano on guitar, that’s my favourite part. What I particularly love about St. Paul’s is the comfortable blend of peace and participation. If you want to sit quietly and reflect, you can. If you want to join in an action song or share a message, that’s also encouraged. The environment allows you to interact with others as much or as little as you feel comfortable, which I appreciate.

In our busy lives, it’s so easy to get caught up in the past or rush towards the future. But there’s profound peace and joy to be found in simply ‘being in the now,’ taking a moment to stop, breathe, and truly experience the present. It’s in these quiet moments that we can truly connect with ourselves and the world around us.

It’s been a joy to return to a place that feels like home. The congregation is talented at sharing their own messages, and I was happy to hear that Rev Svinda Heinrichs has joined as minister. If you’re looking for a place of refuge, St. Paul’s United Church offers a beautiful blend of community, kindness, and spiritual connection.
